Fireplace in screened porch

Postby forumadmin » Mon Aug 04, 2008 10:48 am

Two part question -
Question 1: Is it allowed by building codes to vent a gas fireplace into a screened porch?
Question 2: If the manufacturer’s product specifications state it must be ventilated to “open air” - is this situation now acceptable?

No, IFGC 501.2 says "outdoors" and the IMC 801.4 says "outside atmosphere". The IMC goes on to require distances from doors and windows. The simplest definition for outdoors does not include enclosed space even if only screens. Lets keep it simple.

This question has come into MN DLI-CCLD many times. Our take, like Pat says,... is "NO."
