Fire Suppression

In calculating the sq. ftg. for fire suppression in a S.F., is anyone using the clear story area such as a foyer and/or great room where there is no actual 2nd floor? In the definition R202 of FLOOR AREA, it talks about the calculated sq. ftg. of the floor within the inside perimeter of exterior walls. Is there a 2nd floor area to be calculated when it's open to the ceiling above? Also under R313.2 Exc. 1. it talks about less than 4500 sq. ft. of floor area. Floor areas shall include all floors. Again is tha "space" a floor? Thanks for any input.

DOLI has come out and said that space is not to be counted. Go by the definition. That's a change from what we were told at the DOLI IRC seminars.
